Rates of diabetes have been rising continuously since the turn of the Century.

In the October 31, 2008 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Centers for Diseases and Prevention (CDC) reported that the incidence of new onset diagnosed diabetes in U.S. adults has increased by 90% over the past decade.

The Increasing Incidence of Diabetes in the 21st Century.

Between 1990 and 2010 the number of people (in the USA) living with diabetes tripled and the number of new cases annually (incidence) doubled.

At the start of the 20th century, childhood diabetes was rare and rapidly fatal. By its end, some 3–4 children per 1,000 in Western countries would require insulin treatment by the age of 20 years, and a steady rise in incidence had been reported from many other parts of the world.

The rise of Childhood Type 1 diabetes in the Twentieth Century.

Diabetes was an uncommon diagnosis in the 19th Century.

Currently 11.3% of the American population are diagnosed with diabetes and another 3.4% are believed to have undiagnosed diabetes. I

Globally 10.5% of the worlds population are believed to have diabetes, with almost half unaware they have the condition.

Speculation about the cause of this rise includes –

  • Lack of childhood exposure to childhood infectious diseases and parasites that normally prime the young immune system.
  • Excessive numbers of childhood vaccines that confuse and weaken the young immune system, triggering autoimmune diseases
  • Rising rates of obesity from increasingly artificial and chemically laden foods, that the body simply does not know how to process.

What ever the reasons for this rise in diabetes rates across the population, diabetes especially type 1 in children is a life threatening disease. Accurate and prompt management is essential.
